ROE GARTELMANN – AUA (Arts & Edn) Hons; Dip. Teaching (Art); FRSASA
Roe’s paintings and drawings are in a variety of media. They include Award winning W/C’s, Oils and Pastels, along with more experimental works in Mixed media and Acrylics. Many of these have also won awards or been selected for major Shows such as the Waterhouse Art Prize.
Works fall into 2 main categories; works painted on site(contemporary realism); and works developed in the studio which tend to be more abstract often developed from paintings and sketches done on site.
Many of the latter paintings will include added materials such as handmade papers acrylic mediums etc. Roe’s colour is vibrant and the works expressive and free; the main emphasis being on composition, tone, and a characteristic use of line.
BACKGROUND OF PRACTICE
My work is a direct response to nature, the world as I see it. Colour and form, texture and pattern are all important. I have travelled widely within Australia and overseas and tend to paint my immediate response to what I see, making numerous sketches and taking photos. However I do not paint directly from photos, but use them as memory joggers. As well as contemporary landscape my work includes figurative, animal pieces and still life.
My background training is as an Art teacher, graduating from the SA School of Art with Honours and also an AUA in Arts & Education from Adelaide University. After teaching for 25 years I began painting professionally and work from my studio near Willunga on the Fleurieu Peninsula. I am also available for demonstrations, to run workshops, and take painting trips to various locations, and am happy to do commission work.
ANY OTHER INFO
My work can be seen at Artworx (Goolwa); Glenelg Fine Art; Rustic Blue (Kangaroo Is); Hahndorf Academy; RSASA; The Stationmasters Gall (Strathalbyn) as well as several interstate galleries and collections throughout Australia and overseas. Studio visits are welcome.
Special instructions; Pastels and mixed media works should be stored face-up or vertically to avoid any marking of the mounts and be hung as soon as possible.
