MICHAEL CAREY

Born in Gawler South Australia.

From an early age I loved drawing and this was nurtured by my mother who also painted and drew. This love of light, colour and form in drawing and painting and the enjoyment of creating has remained with me.

I lived in Crystal Brook in my teens visiting many of the surrounding towns of the southern flinders, Wilpena and beyond, until moving to Adelaide to join the SA Police force in the early 70’s.

I frequently returned to the mid north, keeping in touch with friends, and began photographing and sketching many of the deserted rural homes that scattered the north of the state, and selling them, through commissions.

After 7 years I left the police force and returned to study, completing a commercial art course, and began working in the printing industry as a commercial artist which incorporated design, photography and artwork which included pencil drawings and pen drawings.

Returning to Crystal Brook to live in 1987, from Adelaide, rekindled my love and appreciation of the southern and northern Flinders, and I was fortunate to receive several commissions for pencil sketches and paintings, mainly of rural buildings and homesteads. After retiring in 2013, I began devoting more time capturing, in paint, pen and pencil, still life, buildings and the beauty of this area that I love, South Australia’s own Flinders Ranges.
