Born in Gawler, South Australia, and raised in nearby Williamstown, Don joined the SA Police in 1960 and worked in several branches including uniform patrols, vice and anti-larrikin squads of the C.I.B., before transferring to the forensic science laboratory.

Although Don had always been interested in drawing and painting it was while working in the forensic area that his artistic ability came to the fore, as his duties included drawing likenesses of suspects, scale plans of murder scenes and other crimes.

Don attended the SA School of Art where he studied general and life drawing and painting as a hobby claimed a lot of his free time.

In 1980 Don was commissioned by the Police Department to paint a scene of Adelaide to be presented as a gift to the Royal Australian Navy’s new guided frigate HMAS Adelaide.

Don was chosen to present the painting and he attended the commissioning of the ship in Seattle USA where he made presentations of two paintings.

Whilst exhibiting his works privately and with various art groups throughout SA Don has won several awards and other high distinctions.

Two Successful overseas exhibitions have also been held at the Australian Trade Commission in Hong Kong and the Australian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.

The exhibition in Bangkok produced this quote in the Thailand Times. – “Australians seeing these pictures will feel a moistening of the eye , a lump in the throat and swelling of the heart. This, each will say, is the Australia I know and love.” Karnjariya Sukrung.

Today his paintings hang in the company boardrooms, offices and private collections around the world.

Don is a proud member of the Prestigious group. “The Painters of the Flinders Ranges.”
